Discover · A French TV night 📺

Reality TV means real people (not actors!) filmed in controlled situations. In France, the genre exploded with Loft Story (2001) — the French version of Big Brother. Today the landscape includes social debates (Ça se discute), adventure (Koh-Lanta = Survivor), star-making (The Voice, Star Academy) and romance (L'amour est dans le pré, Mariés au premier regard).

C'est avec beaucoup d'intérêt que j'ai suivi votre émission de cette semaine, « Vivre seul ». Je suis divorcée et je suis sur le point de me remettre avec mon père de mes 3 enfants après 17 ans de séparation.

Pendant ces 17 ans, j'ai mené seule une vie professionnelle très intense : j'ai profité de ce temps pour développer mon entreprise, qui emploie aujourd'hui 25 personnes. Je me suis consacrée à mon travail le matin, à mes enfants le soir. Mais maintenant, mes enfants sont grands, et j'aimerais à mon tour retrouver un peu de tendresse !

5 Key structures to memorise 🧱

Rather than one big grammar point, Lesson 4 gives you 5 high-value structures that show up everywhere — especially in ads, professional emails and applications.

1. être sur le point de + inf

= to be about to (do something) · imminent action
• Vous êtes sur le point de changer de vie. (You're about to change your life.)
• Nous étions sur le point de sortir quand ils sont arrivés.
Compare with aller + inf (near future). "Être sur le point de" is more dramatic, more imminent — "on the verge of".

2. en quoi + question

= in what way, how exactly, in what sense
• En quoi votre profil peut-il nous intéresser ? (In what way could your profile interest us?)
• En quoi est-ce différent ?
⚠️ Don't translate "in what" word-for-word. It's a stylish question, more elegant than "de quelle façon" or "comment".

3. à la recherche de + noun

= in search of, looking for (more formal than "chercher")
• Mon amie est à la recherche d'une personne compétente.
• Cette société est à la recherche d'un directeur de projet.
• « À la recherche du temps perdu » · Proust (1913).
Synonym: chercher. But "à la recherche de" feels more formal, perfect for ads and business writing.

4. profiter de + noun/inf

= to take advantage of, to make the most of
• J'ai profité de ce temps pour développer mon entreprise.
• Je profite de ce message pour vous faire une suggestion. (I'm taking this opportunity to…)
• Profitez-en bien ! Il fait un temps splendide.
The idea: "seize the opportunity". Very common in emails: "Je profite de cet e-mail pour…"

5. consacrer (qch) à + noun

= to dedicate, to give time to
• Je me suis consacrée à mon travail le matin.
• Vous souhaitez quitter votre emploi pour vous consacrer à vos enfants.
• Il a consacré toute sa jeunesse à sa passion du jazz.
Forms: consacrer X à Y or se consacrer à Y (devote oneself fully to Y).

Always learn each structure as a block with its preposition.

💡 Tip: these 5 structures often appear together in a French cover letter or application email:
→ "Je suis sur le point de finir mes études et je suis à la recherche d'un stage. En quoi mon profil pourrait-il vous intéresser? Je peux me consacrer à votre équipe à plein temps. Profitez de ce message pour me poser toutes vos questions."
→ 5 structures, 1 paragraph! The DELF B1 loves this.

Reality TV was born in the Netherlands in 1999 (Big Brother) and went global. In 2026, every country has its iconic shows — often the same formats, adapted.

It all began in 2001 with Loft Story (M6, the French Big Brother) — a national shock. Then explosion: Star Academy (2001), Koh-Lanta (French Survivor, since 2001), The Voice (since 2012), L'amour est dans le pré (farmers looking for love), Mariés au premier regard (scientifically-arranged marriages).
