Grammar — The conditional present

The conditional present is the star tense of French: it expresses politeness, desire, hypothesis, and advice. Whenever you want to be polite, elegant, or to voice a wish — use it!

🛠️ Formation

Very simple: future stem + imperfect endings.
aimer → future: j'aimer-ai → conditional: j'aimer-ais.

Person aimer (regular) pouvoir (irregular) être · avoir
je / j'aimeraispourraisserais · aurais
tuaimeraispourraisserais · aurais
il / elle / onaimeraitpourraitserait · aurait
nousaimerionspourrionsserions · aurions
vousaimeriezpourriezseriez · auriez
ils / ellesaimeraientpourraientseraient · auraient

📌 4 main uses

1. 🙏 Politeness

"Pourriez-vous me passer le sel ?""Could you pass me the salt?" (more polite than "pouvez-vous…")
"J'aimerais un café, s'il vous plaît.""I'd like a coffee." (instead of "je veux…")
"Auriez-vous 5 minutes ?""Would you have 5 minutes?" → what makes French sound soft and elegant.

2. 💭 Desire / wish

"Je voudrais visiter le Japon un jour." (I'd like to visit Japan one day.)
"J'aimerais parler couramment français." (I'd love to speak fluent French.)
"Ce serait magnifique de vivre à la mer !"

3. 🎯 Hypothesis / imaginary

"Avec plus de temps, je ferais du yoga."
"À ta place, je n'accepterais pas." (In your shoes, I wouldn't accept.)
"Si j'étais riche, j'achèterais une maison à Paris." (structure: "si + imperfect, conditional" = "if … would …")

4. 💡 Advice

"Tu devrais te reposer.""You should rest." (softer than "tu dois…")
"Vous pourriez essayer un autre site."
"Il vaudrait mieux appeler demain.""It'd be better to call tomorrow."

💡 Tip for English speakers:
• The French conditional is roughly "would + verb" in English.
• For politeness, English uses "could / would" — French uses pourriez / voudriez.
Common mistake: confusing future and conditional! je voudrai (future: "I will want") ≠ je voudrais (conditional: "I would like"). The difference? The -s.
• There's no "would have" yet — that's the past conditional, coming later.

🧱 Key verbal structures to memorise

Five small "verb / adjective + preposition" structures that appear all over this lesson. Learn them as a block with the preposition — that's the part English speakers tend to drop, and it's exactly what makes you sound French.

1. convenir à + noun / pronoun

= to suit, to work for someone
• Ce mode de vie me convient parfaitement. (This lifestyle suits me perfectly.)
• Cette date vous conviendrait-elle ? (Would this date work for you?)

2. s'occuper de + noun

= to take care of, to handle
• Je m'occupe de mes enfants le soir.
• Qui s'occupe du chat pendant tes vacances ? (Who's looking after the cat?)

3. (être) capable de + inf.

= to be capable of doing
• Es-tu capable de monter ce meuble ?
• Elle est capable de tout. (She's capable of anything.)
⚠️ Never "capable faire" — always with de.

4. (être) passionné(e) de + noun

= to be passionate about
• Il est passionné de musique classique. (He's passionate about classical music.)
• Mes colocs sont passionnés d'escalade.
Note: also "passionné par" works.

5. (X) fois par (semaine)

= frequency: X times per (week/day/month)
• Je fais du sport trois fois par semaine. (3 times a week.)
• Le ménage ? Une fois par mois.
• Mille fois par jour ! (idiomatic exaggeration)

📌 Bonus · avoir besoin de + noun/inf.

= to need
• J'ai besoin d'aide pour ma cuisine.
• Tu aurais besoin de quelqu'un ?

💡 The golden rule: in French, the preposition is part of the verb. You never say "capable faire" or "passionné musique". It's always capable de, passionné de, convenir à, etc. When you learn a new French verb, learn its preposition at the same time. It's much harder to retro-fit later.

Practice

Exercise 3 — Conjugate in the conditional

Put the verbs in brackets in the conditional present.

  1. Je (vouloir) un café.
  2. Tu (pouvoir) m'aider, s'il te plaît ?
  3. Vous (avoir) l'heure ?
  4. À ta place, je (faire) attention.
  5. On (devoir) partir plus tôt.
  6. Nous (aimer) visiter la cathédrale.
  7. Si j'étais riche, j' (acheter) un château !

Exercise 4 — Make it more polite

Transform the blunt sentence into a polite request (conditional).

  1. "Donne-moi le sel." →
  2. "Je veux une chambre." →
  3. "Vous pouvez m'aider ?" →
  4. "Tu as le temps ?" →

Exercise 5 — Your SOS-Aide.fr ad ✍️🤖 AI-graded

Write a service ad on SOS-Aide.fr: either (a) you're looking for a service (DIY help, tutoring, pet-sitting…), or (b) you're offering one. 80-120 words. In French.

You must use: at least 4 verbs in the conditional present (j'aimerais, je voudrais, pourriez-vous, ce serait, etc.) · service vocabulary · a polite closing.
6

Pronunciation · Polite intonation 🎵

With the conditional, intonation matters as much as the words! A voice that rises at the end = polite question. A voice that falls = affirmation. Listen to the difference.

🎧 Listen to the phrases (~1 min)
↗️ Polite request (rising) ↘️ Affirmation (falling)
Tu pourrais m'aider ↗️ ?Je pourrais t'aider ↘️.
Vous auriez l'heure ↗️ ?J'aurais l'heure ↘️.
Ça vous dirait ↗️ ?Ça me dirait bien ↘️.
On pourrait essayer ↗️ ?On pourrait essayer ↘️.

Exercise 6 — Question or affirmation?

Listen to the phrases and tell if it's a polite question ↗️ or an affirmation ↘️.

  1. Phrase 1 →
  2. Phrase 2 →
  3. Phrase 3 →
  4. Phrase 4 →

Communicate · The phone call ☎️

You're replying to an ad on SOS-Aide.fr. You call the person to discuss the service. Pick your role and play the scene (in French).

🆘 Role A — Requester

You posted an ad. Someone calls. Explain your need (what, when, how much), ask polite questions (conditional) to check skills and availability.

💪 Role B — Provider

You're replying. Introduce yourself, describe your experience, propose a rate and a date. Be friendly (conditional!).

💡 Useful French phrases (conditional):
Bonjour, je vous appelle pour votre annonce. Pourriez-vous me donner plus de détails ?
J'aimerais savoir quand vous seriez disponible.
Ce serait pour combien d'heures ?
Auriez-vous de l'expérience avec… ?
On pourrait se voir samedi ?

Culture · Gig economy here and there 🌍

Peer-to-peer service platforms have transformed urban life — in France and in the anglo world. But with very different nuances.

🇫🇷 France · neighbour help, with paperwork

France pioneered Tokup in 2008, then AlloVoisins, Stootie, JeMePropose, Yoojo (formerly Yoopies). Strong neighbour-help vibe, but with a legal framework: URSSAF + the famous chèque CESU (universal service voucher).

Key terms:

CESU (service voucher) URSSAF auto-entrepreneur à la prestation la note (rating)

👉 In 2026, the French peer-services market exceeds €2.5 billion. The CESU lets you pay a provider while getting a 50% income-tax reduction.

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Anglo world · the TaskRabbit era

In the US/UK, TaskRabbit (acquired by IKEA in 2017) was the pioneer. Now there's Thumbtack (US, more pro-oriented), Handy, Bark (UK), Rover (pet-sitting), Care.com (caregiving). The gig culture is much more professionalised than in France.

Key terms:

gig economy side hustle tasker vetted provider 1099 worker (US) rating & reviews

👉 TaskRabbit alone generated $200M+ in 2024. Workers are typically classified as independent contractors (1099 in the US) with little safety net — a major political debate in California (AB5) and the UK (Uber Supreme Court case).

🤔 Question to debate

If you could offer 3 services on such a platform, which would you choose? And what hourly rate would you ask? (Use the conditional!)

🆘🤝✨

Well done! You can now be polite like a true French speaker.

You've mastered the conditional present across all 4 uses — politeness, desire, hypothesis, advice. Next up: reality TV and the media world!
