Grammar — The placement of the negation

French negation is not as simple as English "not" — placement changes depending on the tense, and several negations can be combined. Here are all the rules.

The main negations

ne … pas	simple negation (= "not")	Je ne sors pas ce soir. (I'm not going out tonight.)
ne … plus	change / end ("no longer / not anymore")	Je ne bois plus de café. (I don't drink coffee anymore.)
ne … jamais	zero frequency ("never")	Elle ne regarde jamais la télé. (She never watches TV.)
ne … rien	zero object ("nothing")	Il ne dit rien. (He says nothing.)
ne … personne	no person ("nobody")	Tu ne connais personne ici ? (You don't know anyone here?)
ne … que	restriction (= "only")	Je n'aime que toi. (I love only you.)
ne … aucun(e)	"no" + noun ("not a single")	Il n'a aucune idée. (He has no idea.)

Placement by tense

Tense	Rule	Example
Simple tense (present, future…)	ne + verb + pas / plus / jamais / rien…	Elle ne répond jamais à mes messages.
Compound tense (passé composé…)	ne + auxiliary + pas / plus / jamais / rien + past participle ⚠️ Exception: personne and que go after the past participle	Je n'ai rien dit. (I said nothing.) But: Je n'ai vu personne. (I saw nobody.)
Infinitive	ne pas / ne plus / ne rien / ne jamais + infinitive (both words stuck together!)	Il préfère ne pas répondre. Elle a décidé de ne plus sortir.
Gerund / participle	en ne … pas · n'ayant rien	En ne répondant pas, il l'a ghostée.

Combining negations

Several negations can be combined: plus jamais, plus rien, plus personne, jamais rien, jamais personne, etc. You still say ne only once.

Depuis son divorce, elle ne sort plus jamais. (Since her divorce, she never goes out anymore.)
Sur cette appli, je n'ai trouvé plus personne d'intéressant. (On this app, I no longer find anyone interesting.)
Il n'a jamais rien compris à l'amour. (He has never understood anything about love.)
Depuis 5 ans, elle ne rencontre plus que des joueurs. (For 5 years, she's been meeting only players.)

💡 Tip for English speakers: In English you have one negation word (not, never, nothing, nobody…). In French you always need the small word "ne" placed before the verb, plus the second word (pas, jamais, rien, personne) after it. Forgetting the "ne" is the number one mistake for anglophone learners.

Also: English uses do-support (I do not know) — French doesn't. Just Je ne sais pas. No "do."

🧱 Key verbal structures to memorise

Three constructions from this lesson to learn as a block (with preposition or suffix):

1. se décider à + inf.

= to finally make up one's mind (after hesitation)
• On s'est décidé à répondre à l'annonce.
• Elle s'est décidée à le quitter.
• Il n'arrive pas à se décider.
⚠️ Don't confuse : décider de + inf (= just decide) vs se décider à + inf (= finally decide after hesitation).

2. The suffix -aine · approximation

= roughly X, about X (a feminine noun in French)
• Des gens dans la trentaine / quarantaine (in their 30s / 40s).
• Une dizaine de pages (≈ 10), une vingtaine de jeunes (≈ 20).
• Des centaines de kiosques (hundreds), un millier (thousand).
Form : number + -aine (or -ier for thousand). Use it like a feminine noun: "une dizaine".

3. regretter qch / qn vs regretter de + past inf.

= the verb means "regret" or "miss" depending on construction
(a) regretter + noun ≈ to miss / regret a thing:
• Elle regrette sa jeunesse. (She misses her youth.)
• Je ne regrette rien de mon investissement.
(b) regretter de + past infinitive = to regret having done:
• Je regrette d'avoir dit cette bêtise. (I regret saying that.)
• Tu regrettes d'être venu ?

💡 Golden rule: in French, the preposition is part of the verb. se décider à, regretter de… always learn the verb and its preposition together.

🔍 Two eras, one same drama

1833 · Arvers	A man silently loves a woman who "won't understand." Solitude inside closeness.
1973 · Hardy	A woman hesitates to tell the man she loves what she feels — the phone stays silent.
2026 · Tinder	We hesitate to swipe, to send the first message, to reply… 200 years later, it's the same heart that trembles.

Exercise 6 — Your "message personnel" 💌 AI-graded

In the style of Françoise Hardy or Arvers, write a "message personnel": what you'd like to say to someone but don't dare. A letter, a poem, an inner monologue. 120-180 words. In French.

You must use: at least 4 different negations (ne pas, ne plus, ne jamais, ne rien, ne personne, ne que, sans, aucun…) · at least 1 combination (plus jamais, jamais rien…) · at least 1 conditional (j'aimerais, je voudrais, j'oserais…).

Pronunciation · Standard or colloquial?

In casual spoken French, the French often drop the "ne". But careful: this is never written! Listen to the difference.

⚠️ Remember: in writing (assignments, exams, letters), always write the "ne". DELF, DALF, school — all require the standard form. The colloquial version is just to help you understand French spoken between friends.

Culture · Singlehood across cultures 🌍

France and the English-speaking world live singlehood in different ways. A few numbers and key terms.

🇫🇷 France · "le célibat assumé"

In France, being single is more and more owned, even valued. Over 16 million singles in 2026 (~25% of adults). Much less social pressure to marry compared to a generation ago.

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Anglo world · post-app fatigue

In the US/UK, dating app culture peaked then crashed: a 2024 Pew survey showed 3 in 10 Americans have used a dating app, but burnout is widespread. A new vocabulary of self-acceptance and frustration has emerged.
