The 5 essentials

1️⃣ The imparfait

Formation: stem of the 1st person plural (nous parlons) + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

Exception: être → j'étais, tu étais, il était…

Uses:

  • ① Description in the past: Il faisait beau, j'avais dix ans.
  • ② Past habit (≈ English "used to / would"): Tous les matins, je prenais le bus.
  • ③ Action in progress (≈ English "was ...-ing"): Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.

💡 Think of the imparfait as the French equivalent of was ...-ing / used to — the background tense.

2️⃣ Imparfait vs. passé composé

  • Imparfait = background, description, habit. Avant, j'habitais à Lyon. ("I used to live in Lyon.")
  • Passé composé = one-off action, specific event. En 2018, j'ai déménagé à Paris. ("In 2018, I moved to Paris.")
  • Often together: Je dormais (imparfait) quand le facteur a sonné (PC). = "I was sleeping when the postman rang."

3️⃣ depuis / pendant / il y a

  • depuis + duration or date → action still going on (English uses present perfect: "I've worked here for / since…"): Je travaille ici depuis trois ans / depuis 2022.
  • pendant + duration → finished action, fixed length (English "for"): J'ai étudié l'anglais pendant six ans.
  • il y a + duration → point in the past (English "ago"): J'ai trouvé mon premier job il y a deux ans.

⚠️ Classic anglophone trap: French uses the present tense with depuis, not the past — "I have been working" → je travaille depuis…

4️⃣ Simple relative pronouns

  • qui = subject of the following verb (≈ "who / that / which"): L'ami qui habite à Lyon.
  • que = direct object (≈ "that / which / whom"): Le livre que j'ai lu.
  • où = place or time (≈ "where / when"): La ville où je suis né. / Le jour où nous nous sommes rencontrés.
  • dont = complement with de (≈ "whose / of which / about which"): Le métier dont je rêve. ("The job I dream of.")

⚠️ Unlike English, the relative pronoun is never optional in French. We can say "the book I read", but in French you must say le livre que j'ai lu.

5️⃣ Past-participle agreement with a preceding direct object

In the passé composé with avoir, the past participle agrees with the direct object only if it comes before the verb:

  • J'ai vu Marie. (object after → no agreement)
  • Marie ? Je l'ai vue hier. (object l' before → agreement)
  • Les études que j'ai faites à Oxford. (object que before → agreement)

Write 100-150 words. Use the imparfait (description, age, context) and the passé composé (actions, events). Also think about depuis / pendant / il y a.

💡 Heads up — false friend: un animateur / animatrice here is NOT a film animator. In a French summer camp or campsite, it means a children's activity leader / camp counselor — the person who runs the games, songs and outings. In a TV context it can also mean a "host / presenter".

🅰️ You are the candidate

You've just finished your studies and you're looking for a job. You have an interview at a French Office de tourisme (tourist information office). Talk about your studies and the small jobs you did as a student.

👉 Introduce yourself, talk about your diplomas, languages, experience (passé composé + imparfait), and use pendant / depuis.

🅱️ You are the recruiter

You work for an Office de tourisme and you're hiring someone for the front desk. You're meeting a candidate. Ask them about their studies and work experience.

👉 Ask about age, diplomas, languages spoken, experience; use Pourriez-vous… ? / Depuis combien de temps… ?

💡 Culture note: French job interviews are usually more formal than UK/US/Australian ones. Use vous, shake hands at the start, and don't be afraid of silence — the recruiter often leads. Talking about your diplomas in detail is normal: in France, your parcours scolaire matters longer into your career than in the anglophone world.
