Charlotte Gainsbourg

A life shaped by family, music and cinema.

👪 The family

Charlotte Gainsbourg was born in London on 21 July 1971. Her mother, Jane Birkin, was a British actress and singer. Her father, Serge Gainsbourg, was one of the great French songwriters of the 1960s-1980s. Charlotte has two well-known half-sisters too: Kate Barry, a photographer, and Lou Doillon, a singer and model. With her partner, actor and director Yvan Attal, she has three children: Ben, Alice and Joe.

🎵 The music

Charlotte has been singing since she was 12. Her first duet with her father, "Lemon Incest" (1984), made huge waves! She has released several albums since: 5:55 with the band Air in 2006, IRM with the American Beck in 2009, Rest in 2017. She vient de sortir a new, more pop-oriented album, and she's going to start a major international tour in 2026.

🎬 Film and photography

On screen, Charlotte has been a leading actress since her first film, L'Effrontée, at 13. She has appeared in over 50 films, several of them with Yvan Attal and with Danish director Lars von Trier. Like her half-sister Kate, she also loves photography and has published several photo books.

Dialogue · At the newsstand

Two friends, Manon and Sophie, are standing in front of a newsstand, talking about the new magazine cover featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Manon — Eh, regarde ! Le nouveau numéro est sorti, avec Charlotte Gainsbourg en couverture. Tu l'aimes ?
Hey, look! The new issue is out, with Charlotte Gainsbourg on the cover. Do you like her?
Sophie — Bien sûr ! Tout le monde l'aime ! Elle vient de sortir un nouvel album, et il est super.
Of course! Everyone loves her! She just released a new album, and it's amazing.
Manon — Ah bon ? Je ne savais pas. Et elle va bientôt en concert en France ?
Really? I didn't know. Is she going on tour in France soon?
Sophie — Oui, en avril ! Et puis, elle va commencer une grande tournée internationale en 2026. Toutes les places vont partir vite !
Yes, in April! Plus, she's going to kick off a big international tour in 2026. All the tickets will go fast!
Manon — On y va ensemble ? On vient de recevoir notre paie ce mois-ci.
Shall we go together? We just got paid this month.
Sophie — Oui ! Mais avant, je veux acheter ce magazine. Charlotte parle aussi de Lou Doillon, sa demi-sœur. Toute la famille est artiste !
Yes! But first I want to buy this magazine. Charlotte also talks about Lou Doillon, her half-sister. The whole family is in the arts!
Manon — Oui, c'est dingue ! Mère, père, sœurs, enfants… tous sont chanteurs ou acteurs.
Yeah, it's wild! Mother, father, sisters, kids… every one of them is a singer or actor.
Sophie — Bon, je l'achète, et on va prendre un café pour le lire ?
OK, I'm buying it. Shall we grab a coffee and read it?

💡 Notes

  • Charlotte Gainsbourg — Franco-British actress and singer, considered one of the great French artists of our time.
  • Une demi-sœur = a half-sister (one parent in common). Same for demi-frère.
  • Une dynastie = a "dynasty" — used loosely for a family where several generations share the same profession. "La dynastie Gainsbourg".
  • Une tournée = a (concert) tour — a series of shows in different cities or countries. ⚠️ False friend: nothing to do with English "tournament".
  • "C'est dingue !" — casual: "That's crazy!" / "That's wild!" (= c'est incroyable).

Grammar

How French works

① Recap of the 3 tenses "around the present" just-happened · happening · about-to-happen

In A1 you learned to talk about the just-happened past and the near future. In A2 you'll use them constantly to comment on current events: what just happened? what's about to happen?

① Recent past ⏪

a very recent action, just completed

venir de + INFINITIVE

📌 Charlotte vient de sortir un album. "Charlotte just released an album."

📌 Je viens de recevoir ma paie. "I just got paid."

⏱️ ≈ "have just + past participle"

② Present ⏺️

current state, ongoing action

Je verbe / Tu verbe / etc.

📌 Charlotte chante depuis 12 ans. "Charlotte has been singing since she was 12."

📌 Je lis le magazine.

⏱️ ≈ "I + verb" / "I am + verb-ing"

③ Near future ⏩

imminent or planned action

aller (present) + INFINITIVE

📌 Elle va commencer une tournée. "She's going to start a tour."

📌 On va prendre un café.

⏱️ ≈ "going to + verb"

💡 English parallel — exact match!
  • "I have just finished" ↔ "Je viens de finir"
  • "I'm going to finish" ↔ "Je vais finir"
The structures even mirror each other: a helper verb (venir/aller) plus an infinitive. Way easier than it looks.

Tout — adjective and indefinite pronoun Four forms, several jobs

A. Tout as an adjective ("all / the whole / every") — agrees with the noun

SingularPlural
Masculinetout le mondetous les jours
Femininetoute la familletoutes les places

📌 Tout le monde l'aime. "Everyone loves her."
📌 Toute la famille est artiste. "The whole family is in the arts."
📌 Tous les jours, elle écoute de la musique. "Every day, she listens to music."
📌 Toutes les places vont partir vite. "All the seats will go fast."

B. Tout as an indefinite pronoun ("everything / all of them") — replaces a noun

  • Tout va bien. "Everything's fine." (tout = neuter singular)
  • Mère, père, sœurs… tous sont artistes. "Mother, father, sisters… they're all artists." (tous = masc. plural pronoun → pronounced [tus]!)
  • Mes amies ? Je les vois toutes ce soir. "My friends? I'm seeing all of them tonight."
⚠️ The most important thing in this lesson — pronouncing tous:
  • Tous les jours [tu-le-ʒuʁ] — "tous" as adjective, the s is silent.
  • Tous sont artistes [tus-sɔ̃-tar-tist] — "tous" as pronoun, the s is pronounced!
  • 🔑 Rule: if tous is followed by a noun → adjective → [tu]. If tous stands alone or is followed by a verb → pronoun → [tus].
English doesn't make this distinction at all (we always say "all"), so you have to consciously pause and think.

C. Tout as an adverb ("very, completely") — invariable

  • Elle est tout heureuse. "She's totally happy."
  • C'est tout près d'ici. "It's right near here."

📌 Footnote: before a feminine adjective starting with a consonant, tout becomes toute as a courtesy: elle est toute contente. (Yes, even invariable adverbs cheat sometimes.)

Real-world tasks

🎤 Interview

With a partner, interview Charlotte Gainsbourg (or any celebrity of your choice). Ask 8 questions about family, career, current activities, and future plans. Mix in recent past, present, and near future.

Question ideas:

  • Quelle est votre nationalité ?
  • D'où venez-vous ? Combien de frères et sœurs avez-vous ?
  • Qu'est-ce que vous venez de faire ?
  • Quel est votre prochain projet ?
  • Quelle est votre activité préférée ?

👪 What about you?

Introduce your family to a partner. Are there any artists, doctors, teachers, engineers… running "de mère en fille" or "de père en fils" (= a family tradition passed down)? Use "Dans ma famille, tout le monde est…".

📰 Time to write

Pick an artistic family from your own country (the Coppolas, the Fondas, the Marleys, the Jacksons…). Write a short magazine profile (around 100 words) modelled on the Charlotte Gainsbourg piece. Use the same headings:

  • 👪 The family — parents, siblings, children
  • 🎬 The work — what do they do?
  • 🌟 Right now — what have they just done? what are they about to do?

Pronunciation

"Tout" — three different sounds

"Tout" — liaison and linking When the t is silent, when it's not

The word tout changes its pronunciation depending on context. Three rules:

RuleExamplePronunciation
1. tout + consonant (adjective)tout le monde[tu-lə-mɔ̃d] — silent t
2. tout + vowel (liaison)tout est bien[tut-ɛ-bjɛ̃] — t pronounced!
3. tous as a pronoun (alone)Ils sont tous artistes[tus-ar-tist] — s pronounced!

👂 Listen and repeat:

  1. Tout le monde l'aime. [tu-lə-mɔ̃d]
  2. Toute la famille est artiste. [tut-la-fa-mij]
  3. Mes amis sont tous arrivés. [tus-a-ri-ve]
  4. Tout est bien qui finit bien. [tut-ɛ-bjɛ̃] "All's well that ends well."
  5. Charlotte les connaît tous. [tus]
  6. Elle est tout heureuse. [tu-tø-ʁøz] — adverb (invariable)

💬 Anglophone tip:

  1. tout before a masculine singular noun (tout le monde) = [tu], never [tut].
  2. If the next word starts with a vowel or a silent h → liaison: [tut].
  3. tous as a standalone pronoun (= "all of them") → [tus], with the s!

⚠️ Classic mistake: pronouncing "tous les jours" as [tus-le-ʒuʁ]. Wrong! It's [tu-le-ʒuʁ]. The s stays silent when tous is an adjective.
