Miss Liu is in France. She loves French food — but ordering at a restaurant isn't always easy: you need to understand the waiter, choose a dish, say how you want your meat cooked, sometimes react when something is no longer available… We'll learn all of that in four steps, from the simplest exchange to the most natural conversation.

From least to most cooked
💡 For duck breast, you'll often hear « rosé » — somewhere between rare and medium, lightly pink in the middle. It's the most common way duck is served in France.

💧 Water
In every French restaurant, you can ask for a carafe d'eau. That's tap water — and it's free. You're never required to order bottled water.

💰 Service charge & tipping
In most French restaurants, service is included in the listed price (a percentage is already built in). You're not expected to leave a tip the way you would in the US or UK. If the service was particularly good, you can leave a few coins — it's appreciated, but never required.

💳 Paying
Card payments are accepted almost everywhere. With friends, you can ask to pay separately — each person pays for what they ordered.

🎯 Final challenge
You're at a restaurant in Paris. With a partner or your teacher, role-play the whole scene in French:
- Ask for a table for two.
- Order a drink (non-alcoholic, or a glass of wine).
- Order a starter and a main course.
- Choose how you want your meat cooked.
- The waiter announces that one dish is no longer available — react and switch.
- Ask for the bill.
- Pay by card (or ask to pay separately).
Activity — Swap roles
Once the scene is done, switch roles. Whoever played Miss Liu becomes the waiter, and vice versa.
💡 Tip — for the waiter: vary your tone (polite/rushed), pretend a dish is no longer available, throw in a small surprise (a broken glass, a forgotten order…).
