💡 Strategy tip for English speakers: French times use the 24-hour clock — "quinze heures" is 3 p.m., not 1500 hours military-style. Don't get tripped up trying to translate back to a.m./p.m. mid-listening; just write the number. Also watch out for the faux ami « candidat » = applicant (not a political candidate here), and « poser sa candidature » = to apply (not to "pose" anything).

💡 Strategy tip: Just like IELTS or Cambridge B1 Preliminary reading tasks, the test rewards finding exact information, not paraphrasing — write the time as it appears (17:50) and copy proper nouns (La Rochelle) from the document. False friends to watch: « enregistrement » = check-in (not "recording"), « pièce d'identité » = ID document (not "an identity piece"), and dates use day/month/year, not month/day/year.

🇬🇧 English-speaker trap: the imparfait/passé composé split doesn't map cleanly to English past tenses. "I went to the beach every summer" is imparfait in French (habit) — « j'allais à la plage chaque été » — not passé composé. Default rule: was/were + -ing, used to, would (=habit) → imparfait; clean one-time action → passé composé.

🇬🇧 Anglophone calques to avoid:
  • "I had a great time" → je me suis bien amusé(e) / j'ai passé un super moment, NOT j'ai eu un grand temps.
  • "To visit a friend" → rendre visite à un ami; visiter is only for places.
  • "I missed the train" → j'ai raté le train, NOT j'ai manqué le train.
  • Postcards usually use tu, not vous, with a close friend.
